A cover and a winterizing chemical kit are not two separate purchases. They are one system, and each one only works as well as the other. The cover keeps light and debris out. The chemistry handles whatever gets past it. Get one right and neglect the other and you still open to green water in April.
Why the cover and the chemistry work as a pair
Algae needs three things: light, warmth, and nutrients. A good cover takes away the light and most of the nutrients by keeping leaves and pollen out of the water. Your winterizing chemicals handle the rest, holding a low level of sanitizer and an algaecide in reserve for the weeks when the water is still warm enough for growth.
This is why a torn cover is worse than no cover in one specific way. It lets light and debris in but you stop checking, so the problem compounds quietly for five months.
Choosing the right cover
There are three real categories, and the right one depends on your pool type and how much foot traffic your yard sees.
- Above ground winter covers: a solid tarp secured with a cable and winch around the top rail. Inexpensive, effective, and paired with an air pillow to manage ice expansion. Plan on replacing every three to five seasons.
- Solid safety covers: anchored into the deck, they block all light and support weight. Best light control of any option, but they collect standing water, so you need a cover pump running through the winter.
- Mesh safety covers: also deck anchored and weight rated, but they let rain and snowmelt drain through while filtering out debris. Less maintenance than a solid cover, though a small amount of light gets through, so your chemistry does a little more of the work.
What goes in a winterizing chemical kit
We build closing kits around the BioGuard line because the products are formulated to work together and the dosing is straightforward. A complete kit covers four jobs.
- Balancing: pH, total alkalinity, and calcium hardness brought into range before anything else goes in
- Shock: a chlorine or non chlorine oxidizer to clear organic load before the pool goes dormant
- Winter algaecide: a long acting formula that stays effective for months rather than days
- Stain and scale control: a sequestering agent that keeps metals and hardness in solution instead of on your surfaces
The four mistakes we see every spring
Adding chemicals in the wrong order. Balance first, always. Shock added to unbalanced water is largely wasted, and algaecide added before shock can be destroyed by it.
Dosing by guess. A twenty thousand gallon pool and a thirty five thousand gallon pool are not close enough to eyeball. Bring us a water sample and we will size the kit properly.
Reusing a cover that is one season past done. If you can see daylight through it or the stitching at the grommets is pulling, it is not going to make it to April.
Forgetting the cover pump on a solid cover. Standing water plus a hard freeze puts real load on your anchors and your cover seams.
Pick it up in Johnson City or Kingsport
Both showrooms stock covers, air pillows, cover pumps, anchors, and the full closing chemical lineup. Bring a water sample and your pool dimensions and we will put together exactly what your pool needs, nothing extra.
If you would rather not handle any of it, our service team can supply and install the cover as part of a full closing.
