Your pup can swim, just be cautious

We love our dogs and want to make them a part of our outdoor activities whenever possible. But is it safe for dogs to take a dip in the swimming pool? The short answer is yes, but there are a few precautions to keep in mind before letting your pooch take a plunge. Dog fur contains many contaminants that will affect your water balance. Pollen, dander, and multiple types of bacteria are introduced to your water when a dog swims. Their fur also sheds in the water, so check your skimmer basket and remove their fur as quickly as possible. The AKC recommends brushing your pert prior to swimming, and towel drying afterwards, paying extra attention to drying the ears. Always supervise your dog while swimming and have them wear a life jacket. Swimming will tire your dog quickly, so limit their swimming to 10 minutes at a time. Lastly, ingesting large amounts of pool water can be toxic. Try to limit the pool water intake and have freshwater available. Following these safety guidelines will allow your pup to share in the family fun all summer long!
