Maintaining your Sand Filter

Your sand filter works extremely hard to keep your pool clean. Sand filters can remove particles as small as 20 microns from your water. That’s less than half the width of a human hair! Filter sand is made from quartz silica, and uses its jagged edge to collect debris, which is removed when the pool is backwashed. Similar to how rocks in a river are worn smooth, the flow of water through the filter wears the rough edges down over time, reducing their ability to trap particles. Sand that is old or dirty can cause your water to become cloudy, decrease water flow and an overall decrease water quality. We recommend cleaning and degreasing your sand annually and replacing your sand every 3-6 years. If you are unsure how old your sand is, that could be an indication it’s time to replace it.
