Pool Maintenance FAQs:

Your Guide to a Clear East Tennessee Summer

Expert Advice from Isaacs Pools & Spas – Serving the Tri-Cities Since 1978

The Basics of Water Care

In East Tennessee, we recommend testing your water at least 2–3 times a week during the peak summer season. High humidity and sudden mountain rainstorms can quickly alter your pH and chlorine levels. Consistent testing prevents algae blooms before they start.

For a safe and comfortable swim, aim for these ranges:

  • pH: 7.2 – 7.6

  • Total Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm

  • Free Chlorine: 1.0 – 3.0 ppm

  • Calcium Hardness: 200 – 400 ppm

Cloudy water is usually caused by three things: poor filtration, unbalanced chemistry, or the beginning of an algae bloom. First, check your filter pressure; if it’s 10 PSI above normal, it’s time to backwash or clean your filter element. If the filter is fine, bring a water sample into our Johnson City or Kingsport showroom for a professional analysis.

Equipment & Filtration

  • Sand Filters: Should be backwashed when the pressure gauge reads 8–10 PSI over its “clean” starting pressure. We recommend a full sand change every 3–5 years.

  • Cartridge Filters: These should be removed and hosed off every 4–6 weeks, with a deep chemical soak at least once a season.

A general rule for Tennessee summers is to run your pump for at least 8–12 hours a day. This ensures that all the water in your pool passes through the filter at least once (a full “turnover”). During extreme heat waves, you may need to run it longer to prevent stagnation.

Seasonal Maintenance in East Tennessee

Most of our neighbors open their pools in late April or early May (to be ready by Memorial Day) and close them in late September. However, if you have a pool heater, you can easily extend your season into October and November.

At Isaacs, our winterization service is comprehensive. We blow out the plumbing lines to prevent freeze damage, install winter plugs, add specialized winterizing chemicals to prevent algae, and secure your safety cover. This protects your investment from harsh Appalachian winters.

Professional Service Options

For busy homeowners, our Pool Valet service handles the “dirty work.” We offer weekly or bi-weekly visits that include skimming, vacuuming, brushing walls, testing water, and adjusting chemicals. It’s the best way to ensure your pool is always “party-ready.”

Absolutely. Many Johnson City homeowners are switching to saltwater for a softer water feel and lower long-term chemical costs. We specialize in salt chlorine generator installations and can help you determine if your current equipment is compatible.
